Project Scope:
This project, Behind the Brain, by Brinsley Tyrell was constructed at Kent State University main campus in Kent, OH. Zach Goebelt was one of 6 art students chosen to participate in this time intensive paid internship lasting two years. Brinsley and his "crew" worked the first summer casting 10,000 colored concrete books and shelves using large rubber molds. The second summer they installed the "library" retaining walls atop massive foundations and carved the large sandstone sculptures. They carved a 20 ton block of sandstone into The Brain. Also an 8 ton chunk was also carved into The Seed which included colored concrete "roots" which "grew" out into the plaza area. During this project Zach became drawn to the material qualities of stonework which inspired him to create a company devoted to stone craftsmanship, Complete Outdoor Installation, LLC.
